Circular 1/2021 Barcelona, 25 February 2021 To the members of the Executive Bureau To the Secretaries General To the Vice-Presidents of United Cities and Local Governments To the Chairs of UCLG Committees, Working Groups, Communities of Practice and Fora For information: To the Presidency UCLG Declaration on the situation in Myanmar Dear members of the Executive Bureau, Following consultations among the enlarged Presidency team, it was agreed to join the statements of the United Nations and of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to express concern on the current situation in Myanmar, on behalf of our network. As has been the case on previous occasions and mindful of domestic context, UCLG confirms herewith the Organization’s deep attachment to the rule of law, to peace, to the respect for human rights and to the democratic principles that protect people and elected representatives of local and regional authorities. You will find below the text of the Declaration, which was also published on the UCLG Website: The membership of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is closely following events in Myanmar and calls for the respect of the rule of law and the results of the democratic elections, and hope representatives of local authorities will be able to assume the legitimate mandate entrusted to them by the people of Myanmar. We stand with the people of Myanmar and call on human rights to be protected. We join the statements of the United Nations and of ASEAN in which deep concern on the military take-over of the country has been expressed, and hope for a swift restoration of security and peace.
