Report on Key Decisions.
We thank all members for their active participation and insightful contributions. We hope you share the positive perception of the outcomes of the meetings.
Below please find a brief overview of the meetings which took place over three days. Links to the key decision document and media coverage can be found at the end of this email.
Executive Bureau
The virtual meetings of the 2020 edition of the UCLG Executive Bureau gathered over 300 participants, including around 100 local and regional elected officials, as well as numerous high-level partners from international organizations and Ministers under the auspices of the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi. The meetings, held under the motto “
From physical distancing to social closeness”, confirmed the resolve of the UCLG leadership to contribute to the implementation of the international agendas as critical instruments to overcome the unprecedented global challenges in times of the pandemic.
The UCLG Presidency is particularly grateful for the active participation of
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization;
Fabrizio Hochschild, United Nations Under Secretary-General and Special Advisor for the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations;
Maimunah Mohd Sharif, United Nations Under Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director;
Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP; and
Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator.
In the framework of the Executive Bureau, UCLG held, together with UNEP, UN-Habitat, UNDP and members of the Global Taskforce such as ICLEI, CLGF and the Global Covenant of Mayors, a Ministerial Dialogue on enhancing commitments to meet the Paris Agreement. The 5-hour event gathered over 200 participants and more than 50 panelists and counted with 3 heads of UN Agencies in an unprecedented sign of recognition about the important role that local and regional governments will need to play in the planet’s ecological transition.
The third day of our Executive Bureau was dedicated to showcasing the vision of local and regional governments towards multilateralism through the celebration of the Global Consultation Towards UN75, in which local and regional leaders from all over the world provided their visions, their hopes and their expectations for how the world will look like in 2045 and how multilateralism will have changed in order to meet this vision. In addition, the LRG Decalogue for the Post-COVID era was approved and will provide an important road map for both our constituency and partners for the necessary work ahead.

The first virtual Executive Bureau was also the occasion of the launch of a new tool, an online platform aimed at creating a one-stop space for all working sessions and enhancing the exchanges of members between meetings. The platform will continue to be developed in the coming months.
