UN High-Level Political Forum
Local and Regional Governments’ Forum: 11 July 2024, New York

 

Dear members,

We are writing to you to provide you with up-dates on the 2024 United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and highlight the activities of our constituency from 10 to 12 July. This message also includes a pre-registration form.
 
As you know, 2024 is a key year for the constituency of local and regional governments as it is the year in which the UN’s Summit of the Future will be taking place, meant to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.
 
The 2024 HLPF will be held from Monday 8 July, to Wednesday 17 July 2024 under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”.
 
Five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be in review this year: Goal 1 on No Poverty; Goal 2 on Zero Hunger; Goal 13 on Climate Action; Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
 
As in previous years, UCLG, on behalf of the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments (GTF), is coordinating the participation of our constituency within the HLPF, as well as the annual report on the role of local and regional governments in the localization of the SDGs, which will be presented in July 2024.

Thursday 11 July:

• Local and Regional Governments’ Forum
• Official VNR Lab: “Advancing integrated SDG planning and implementation: the role of Voluntary National Reviews and Voluntary Local Reviews”

Friday 12 July 12:

• ICPD30 Global consultation: Localizing the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

 
Monday 15 July – Tuesday 16 July (online):

• Voluntary Local Reviews and Voluntary Subnational Review Days

GTF Annual Report “Towards the Localization of the SDGs”
 
The eighth Global Taskforce’s annual report "Towards the Localization of the SDGs" will be presented during the Forum. The report will be accompanied by 3 thematic papers that analyze the state of localization of the SDGs under review at the 2024 HLPF, from a people (paper 1, SDGs 1-2), a planet (paper 2, SDG 13) and a government perspective (paper 3, SDGs 16-17).
 
Moreover, as was the case in previous years, the Local Authorities Major Group (LAMG), will be submitting a sectoral position paper for the 2024 High-Level Political Forum. The paper is based on the constituency’s previous joint statements and contributions to the HLPF and reflects the SDGs in review in 2024. FOR ACTION: Please fill out this pre-registration form if you plan on traveling to New York and participating in the 2024 UN High-Level Political Forum. Please note that this is not the final registration. The UCLG World Secretariat Team will provide information on United Nations events and conferences registration only to those who have submitted this form. As is the case every year, registration to the HLPF remains limited and accreditation through your national government is recommended.
